Mountain rescue team appeals for help

Galway Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT ) is appealing to the public to support its annual bucket collection which takes place on Saturday.

Members of the team will be fundraising at Shop Street and at the Galway Shopping Centre during the day.Team leader Ronan Concannon says it costs about €30,000 per year to run the team.

“We need to cover costs such as insurance, transport and rescue and safety equipment. Much of this has to be raised by the team itself and oftentimes members have to cover their own costs associated with callouts and training. Our annual bucket collection is hugely important to us in terms of fundraising and we get a fantastic response from the people of Galway every year.”

GMRT provides a free, voluntary search and rescue service in upland and remote areas of Galway and Clare. In addition, the 30 member team also responds to requests for assistance in lowland missing persons searches. This service is provided 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The organisation will recruit new members early in 2009. For more information log onto www.gmrt.ie
