Greenfields still top

Greenfields Hockey Club continues to top the Connacht Senior League table after a narrow 1 - 0 victory over city rivals Galway 2 on Sunday.

For the second week in a row Greenfields dominated a game they should have won easily. Despite controlling the game throughout, they lived dangerously at times and did just enough to hang on for a narrow win.

Greenfields started well and were a goal up after seven minutes. Dora Gorman took a clearance on the right, and passed to Neasa McGettigan who powered towards the circle. She layed a through ball for Alma Whelan who put the ball between the legs of advancing goalkeeper Natasha Cooke for Mary Healy to have the easiest of tap ins.

Greenfields had a number of chances to extend this lead, but were denied by a stubborn Galway defence which was well marshalled by Emma Glanville and by several fine saves from Natasha Cooke.

Galway had a chance to equalise on 15 minutes from a short corner when a good move enabled Kate O’Callahan to give a neat back swipe to Deirdre Hatton, but here effort was just wide of the upright.

The second half was more of the same until the last 10 minutes when Galway sensed they could sneak a goal and share the spoils. Emma Glanville provided some good passes for the Galway forwards, but Greenfields’ defender Catherine Moore seemed to be always in the right place at the right time to thwart any danger as Greenfields held on to claim the full points.
