Council must crackdown on illegal smoky coal says Ó Brolcháin

A crackdown is needed on the selling, marketing, and use of illegal smoky coal in Galway according to Green senator Niall Ó Brolcháin.

Sen Ó Brolcháin is calling on the Galway City Council to implement the existing legislation and put a stop to the “increasing incidents of ‘back of a lorry’ sales after dark of smoky coal”.

“The use of smoky coal is banned in Galway city as it can seriously endanger health,” he said. “Anyone with asthma or other respiratory difficulties can encounter major health problems in areas where illegal smoky coal is used.”

Sen Ó Brolcháin called on the public to purchase coal only from reputable coal merchants in the city.
