Painting tips

Flat or matt (also called vinyl matt ) emulsion

This paint gives a chalky matt finish, the durability of this water-based emulsion is ideal for walls and ceilings. It leaves a spongeable surface and it can also be used on exterior masonry. On average one litre will cover 18 to 20 square yards per coat of paint. This type of paint can also be called vinyl matt emulsion and usually comes in a low-sheen finish.

Eggshell/satin/mid-sheen

This is a traditional oil-based paint giving a low-sheen or also called mid-sheen finish which is resistant to steam and condensations in kitchens, bathrooms, and conservatories. This paint is ideal for woodwork and walls where washing down in intended. It is suitable for interior and exterior use. Expect to need one litre per coat per 20 to 22 square yards . It dries within three to four hours. Under this heading you might also find satin finish even though this is normally how you would refer to eggshell but for wood paint. You might still come across silk paint but those are largely redundant now as water-based eggshells on interior walls are much better.

Acrylic eggshell

Acrylic eggshell is a hardwearing, water-based high opacity paint suitable for interior walls, ceilings, woodwork and metalwork. This paint gives a mid-sheen finish ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and conservatories.

Gloss

This is an oil based high gloss paint using resins and pigments when made to traditional standards or chemicals when made industrially. Drying to a tough hard wearing finish, gloss paint is ideal for interior and exterior woodwork and metalwork. Use it sparingly for doors and trim as its brilliant surface can appear a bit cold and uninviting. For high gloss paints your surface will need extra preparation as those paints will show off any imperfections.

Child-friendly finishes

When painting children's rooms, I would recommend using an eggshell or satin finish paint on the walls and semi-gloss for doors and moldings as these finishes are made for repeated cleanings.

Environmental friendly paints

Usually this applied to water-based paints which contain virtually no VOCS (volatile organic compounds that contribute to atmospheric pollution ) as directed by EU legislation.
