Galway accounts for six per cent of car scrappage scheme

Nearly 800 cars have been registered in Galway since January by buyers who availed of the government scrappage scheme, writes Padraic Deane.

In total 13,615 cars have been processed under the scheme nationally. Forty-nine percent of those are category A cars (€100 road tax p/a ), with the remaining 51 per cent category B cars (€150p/a ). Galway, with 792 cars registered, accounts for six per cent of national sales under the car scrappage scheme.

The boost in new car sales so far this year by more than 26,000 over the whole of last year has seen VAT (+ €43 m ) and VRT (+ €86 m ) increase by €129m. Revenue from scrappage scheme cars alone has already topped €53 million.

Renault leads the way with a share nationally of 18 per cent, followed by Ford with 14 per cent, and Skoda with 10 per cent.
