Anglo Irish investigation is slow but getting results

Only a systemic and forensic investigation will guarantee that the State can get to the bottom of what happened at Anglo Irish Bank.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway East Fianna Fáil Noel Treacy. He acknowledged that the process is “painstakingly detailed” and “the most complex investigation of its kind in the history of the State”.

However he said the investigation of the “reprehensible events at Anglo” remains a top priority for the Gardaí, the ODCE, and the Government and that “the huge work undertaken to date is extremely encouraging”.

To date more than 100,000 documents have been analysed and more than 350 people interviewed. Search warrants, courts orders and arrests have been made. Enquiries are also taking place outside the State.

“I share in the public’s sense of frustration that no-one has been brought before the courts yet but there is no easy way of dealing with these matters,” he said.

Dep Treacy added that 27 gardaí and 16 officers of the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforce are involved in the case and that the Director of Public Prosecutions has also retained two senior and one junior counsel to advise the investigators.

“It is clear,” he said, “that this investigation is substantial and is being taken very seriously.”
