Pensioner charged with indecent assault

A Limerick pensioner has been charged with 25 counts of indecently assaulting a male more than 40 years ago.

The 68-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was brought before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday charged with 25 counts of indecent assault perpetrated against one male at locations in two housing estates in Galway city on various dates between January 1, 1966 and December 31, 1971.

Detective Garda Tony Reidy gave evidence under oath of arrest, charge, and caution. The court heard that in reply to the first 14 charges the accused man replied: “I did, it happened in the bed.” In reply to the remaining charges he said: “I don’t believe it happened that often.”

Inspector Mick Coppinger explained that the charges had been proffered following a file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who consented to trial by indictment. The inspector then requested that the matter be adjourned for service of a book of evidence and said that the State had no objection to the accused being remanded on his own bail.

Judge Fahy remanded the accused on his own bail of €900 with €300 to be lodged, to appear again at Galway District Court on October 20 next for service of the book of evidence. Conditions of bail included that the accused have no contact with the complainant or any other witnesses pending completion of these matters. Legal aid was also granted.
