Kenyan grandmother to get honorary degree at NUIG

Sarah Wairimu, who operates the children’s orphanage Dochas Nasamu near Kangari in Kenya, will be awarded an honorary arts degree in NUI, Galway on Tuesday October 21.

Ms Wairimu is the mother of Mary Anne Wangari-Mullen of Corrach Buí and grandmother to Shane and Sarah. Her Dochas Nasamu orphanage caters for and educates up to 60 children who have lost their parents through HIV. The orphanage is almost completely funded by the people of Galway through the charity shop Harambee on Newcastle Road.

Moma Sarah, as she is affectionately known, has been nominated by Dr Ray Murphy of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUIG. The conferring on Tuesday will be attended by family members, fundraiser Laura O’Connor, and board members Cllr Billy Cameron and Nancy Coen.
