Celebrate Diwali with Galway’s Hindu community

Galway’s Hindu community are preparing for Diwali - the victory of good over evil - and will celebrate the festival on November 1 in the Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra, at 5pm.

Diwali is celebrated for five days with each day having its own significance. The first day is called Dhan teras. Houses and businesses are decorated and entrances are made colourful to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

The second day is Narak-chaturdashi when Lord Krishna killed the demon Nakasur.

The third day is the most important when light penetrates darkness as Lakshmi alights on earth.

The final day is Bhaiyya Duj and is observed as a symbol of love between brothers and sisters.
