Twenty-first Galway Pride Festival to begin today

Mayor of Galway Michael Crowe will launch the 21st consecutive celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Pride today (Thursday ). The festival will run from today until Sunday with celebrations from sporting events to art exhibitions, and the annual Pride festival, taking place around the city.

The festival is being organised by a subcommittee of Amach! LGBT Galway Limited, the newly established representative body for LGBT people and interests in the Galway city and county.

Saturday afternoon will see the annual Pride parade leaving from the Town Hall Square, progressing through Shop Street, High Street, Quay Street and finishing at the City Museum at Spanish Arch. On Saturday evening the official 21st celebration party of Galway Pride will take place in the Black Box and will feature well-known local band Disconnect4 as well as Eden and special guest star Eleanor McEvoy. All are welcome to attend this very special event. Tickets are €12 and are available on www.tht.ie, from committee members, and on the door.

Local venues will offer full programmes of events that complement the official Galway Community Pride events. Annual treats include the Eamonn Duddy memorial soccer tournament, which will take place in the Kingfisher Club in Sunday at 11am. Sunday afternoon features the traditional Corrib cruise, which this year will be hosted by the one and only Mr Pussy.

Galway Community Pride will also hold an exhibition of artwork by several local LGBT artists in the lobby of the Town Hall Theatre. This will run throughout the Pride festival and the exhibition will also offer an information point which will distribute information about the Pride Festival as well as general LGBT health and education issues.
