Moycullen too strong for Leitir Móir in club championship

Moycullen who will face Killererin in the county quarter finals in three weeks time had a good win over Naomh Anna Leitir Móir in Pearse stadium last weekend, winning on a score-line of 1-16 to 1-11.

Sean O’ Dea’s team are improving with each outing and the return of former Galway star, Paul Clancy has provided a real central point to their attack. Lining out at full-forward, the “Bomber Clancy” hit four superb points from play in the first half and those scores set his side on the way to victory. Based on the form he showed last Saturday there are few full-backs in the county who would fancy an hour in his company, and his potential duel with Killererin full-back Colin Forde is one to really look forward to.

A further big plus for Moycullen was the form of new signing Ray Hogan (formerly Salthill ). Hogan scored 1-02 from wing-forward and had a terrific game. His work-rate and use of possession was hugely impressive, and he is a big addition to the side. Moycullen’s Sean Bradshaw was composed and efficient at full-back and Henry Lydon got on an awful lot of ball which he used fairly well. Gareth Bradshaw and Mark Lydon did some good things at midfield, but they will need to be more dominant against Killererin if their side are to reach the last four.

Gearoid Clancy had a superb second half from centre-forward and his three glorious points from play which really turned the game Moycullen’s way. Philly Lydon too was impressive from placed balls and hit 0-6 from frees, however he will need to be more clinical in open play in the quarter final.

Leitir Móir tried hard and will be disappointed to have bowed out. They had good performances from Ferdia Breathnach, Pádraig Mark Ó Fátharta and Ciarán Bairead.

However, the player that impressed me most was Cormac Ó Conghaile who had a tremendous game at centre-forward and he has electrifying pace. He scored some glorious points from play and really caught the eye.

Club football round-up.

Corofin are still the team to beat in the club championship and they remain on course for a three-in-a-row following their win over Micheal Breathnachs.

A goal by Greg Higgins in the first half was a critical moment and despite some fine points from the boot of Petie Kenny, Corofin advance to meet Caherlistrane on a score-line of 1-14 to 0-11.

Also on Saturday, Caherlistrane had a fine win over Caltra, 2-13 to 1-10, in Tuam Stadium with a good display of point-taking from Cormac Bane and goals from Cathal Coyne and Eric Monaghan.

Annaghdown as expected defeated Kilkerrin/Clonberne by 1-11 to 0-9 with Wesley Fallon scoring the crucial goal.

In Sunday’s action, Milltown’s Ciarán Murphy was the star of the show upon his introduction hitting four points which helped to defeat a disappointing Claregalway outfit. Barna had an impressive win over Tuam, 1-11 to 0-10 and Mountbellew defeated Killanin 1-13 to 1-08.

In the big game on Sunday evening, Killererin, inspired as usual by the Joyces’ put Salthill to the sword, by three points, 0-16 to 1-10. Padraic hit 0-6 (3fs ) and his cousin Nicky shot 0-5 (3fs ) respectively.
