Cuddy raises concerns about new Oranmore roundabout

Oranmore Councillor Jim Cuddy has expressed serious concerns regarding the proposed location of a roundabout by Galway County Council at the Beal an Bradán bridge on the Oranmore-Maree Road, which he claims will encroach on the land and gardens of local residents.

“There is no logistical reason why this roundabout cannot be located nearer to Oranmore on this road,” Cllr Cuddy opined. “I know that there are concerns regarding an area close to where the roundabout is proposed, which is a designated special area of conservation and a salt marsh, however I firmly believe that the wishes of local landowners who have worked hard building homes, lawns and gardens should take precedence.

“Another problem if the roundabout is constructed at its current proposed location is that residents of the nearby houses would have to turn left out of their gateways before they can eventually turn around and come up towards Oranmore,” he warned.

“All I am asking is that common sense prevails. There is no evidence whatsoever that locating the roundabout nearer to Oranmore would have any long-term negative effects on either the salt marsh or the special area of conservation and I am asking that the alternatives be considered.

“I have already spoken with senior officials in Galway County Council regarding this issue and I hope that they will reconsider the location of the roundabout.”
