Mountbellew to host its 104th show next week

The 104th annual Mountbellew Agricultural Show will take place on September 13.

According to show chairman Jonathan Regan the horse and pony sections of the show have been attracting huge interest in the run up to the event. The main event at this year’s show will be the hosting of the All Ireland Traditional Irish Sports Horse Foal (colt and filly ) where the best 40 such foals in Ireland will compete for a total prize fund of €2,600.

The All Ireland Galway Ewe Lambs, sponsored by Odlums Ecofleece, will take place again this year as part of the sheep section and is seen by many sheep farmers as a real attempt to the keep the Galway breed of sheep alive and well.

According to show secretary Clare Cheetham there is an increasing number of young people entering for the art section, and the photography exhibits will provide ample proof of the many budding amateur photographers who will raise a chuckle with their interpretation of subject matters ranging from a photo of plant life to getting “caught on the hop”.

Entries in the dog classes are set to increase again this year and one noticeable trend is the huge number of young children who are bringing along their pets.

This year the show will also feature an hour long Irish music session featuring many fine local musicians. “We want to make our show very family friendly, we will have free admission for children under 12 and we have organised a free bouncy castle for all the tots to enjoy themselves,” said Ms Cheetham.

Entries must be with the secretary not later than Saturday September 6 and no entries will be taken after this date. No entries will be accepted on the day of the show.
