Druid’s Penelope to receive New York and London premieres

Druid’s production of Enda Walsh’s Penelope, the sell out hit of this year’s Galway Arts Festival, is set to be staged in New York and London in the coming months.

After its arts festival run, Penelope will be performed in Cork, Edinburgh, Helsinki, and Dublin, before returning to the Town Hall Theatre in September for a four night run. After that Druid will be going to the US to stage the play in St Ann’s Warehouse, one of New York’s most important live performance venues, from October 23 to November 11.

In February 2011 Penelope will receive its London premiere at the Hampstead Theatre where it will run from February 10 to March 5.

It also marks the start of a new partnership between Druid and The Hampstead Theatre and the first season of Hampstead’s new artistic director Ed Hall.

Mr Hall is the son of Sir Peter Hall, who is one of the best known theatre and opera directors in the world today. Galway audiences will be familiar with Ed’s work as a director with British company Propellor which last year brought its stunning productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merchant of Venice to Galway Arts Festival.

“It will be a great start to 2011,” said Druid general manager Tim Smith. “Druid is looking forward to being both a part of an incredible opening season and to our third visit to London, and to New York, with an Enda Walsh production.”
