•Knocknacarra FC pre-season training commenced this week for all adult (junior ) teams on Tuesday and also today (Thursday ) in Cappagh Park at 7pm. The club hopes to enter three adult teams in the Galway & District League for the forthcoming season. Registration for all underage teams takes place at the clubhouse in Cappagh park tomorrow (Friday ) from 7pm to 9pm and Saturday from 1pm to 3pm . •Ulster Bank has been announced as the headline sponsor for this year’s Loughrea Triathlon which takes place on Sunday September 12. Organised by Predator Triathlon Club, the Ulster Bank Loughrea Triathlon is the biggest triathlon in the west of Ireland with more than 700 people participating. An increasingly popular sport, the event will be a welcome tourism boost for the Co Galway town with 3,000 supporters expected to line the route of the triathlon. Based in Loughrea with a growing membership of more than 100 senior and junior members, Predator Triathlon Club has successfully organised the Loughrea Triathlon for the past three years. This year’s triathlon will have three different competitions, the Ulster Bank Loughrea Sprint Triathlon, the Ulster Bank Loughrea Women Only Try a Tri Triathlon, and the Ulster Bank Loughrea Junior Triathlon. Some 100 children are expected to participate, making it the largest children’s triathlon in Ireland. Club chairman Pearse Hunter said: “We hope to build on the success of last year’s event and having Ulster Bank on board as a headline sponsor will help us achieve this.”

•Colga Ladies u-16s have been handed another away draw in this year’s u-16 Irish Cup. They now face Longford Town in the national semi-finals. However the u-16s boast a strong away record this season, having lost only one of 14 away matches.

•Ford, official vehicle sponsor of the FAI, is offering football clubs from Galway the chance to win an exclusive VIP prize to the first Republic of Ireland soccer match at the new Aviva Stadium, which they can then auction to help raise funds. The VIP prize includes chauffeur transport, accommodation and match tickets to the Republic of Ireland’s clash against Diego Maradona’s Argentina on August 11. The competition gives clubs of all levels from underage and junior to League of Ireland the chance to enter. Club representatives must email their name and address to [email protected] and reference ‘Ford Argentina prize’, and in no more than 100 words state why their club deserves to be selected for this prize.
