Connacht decider for Galway Ladies postponed

The Connacht Senior Ladies Football Championship final due to take place on Sunday between Galway and Sligo has been called off.

The decision was made yesterday afternoon by the Connacht Council after meeting with Mayo representatives on Monday evening.

Mayo pulled out of their Connacht championship clash with Sligo on June 19 because they had no manager. According a statement issued at the time, the manager Pat Costello “had stood down after the National League as his position was no longer tenable due to being undermined by certain players within the panel".

As a result Galway, who had played Leitrim in the semi-final, were due to meet Sligo in Sunday’s decider.

Now, however, it is understood the Connacht Council is trying to resolve the situation to allow Mayo back into the competition. The Connacht Ladies GAA issued a statement saying: “It is with regret that that the Connacht Ladies Gaelic Senior Football Championship final between Sligo and Galway is postponed until further notice.”

Galway were in confident form going into Sunday’s final after their strong run in the league and having disposed of Leitrim by 30 points.

The Galway panel is nearing full strength again, although manager Gay O’Brien is still without Sarah Noone and Lisa Cohill who are sidelined with injury.

Both Caitriona Cormican and Deirdre Lawless are still in the US, but talented minor pair Becky Walsh and Dora Gorman return after exam and soccer commitments respectively.

The Galway camp has also been boosted by the performances of Aine Seoighe, Kara Mullins and Julie-Ann Russell in the semi-final win, as well as the return to form of Claire Hehir.
