Streets of Galway celebrates twenty-five years

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Galway’s most popular athletic event, the Streets of Galway 8km Road Race.

The event, hosted by the Galway City Harriers Athletic Club, will take place on Saturday August 7 at 7pm.

First held in 1986, and organised by Cospoir with Jack Mahon and his race committee, the local club took on the organisation a few years later. The race continues to encourage sport for all, from elite athletes and club runners to recreational runners and walkers, as well as people from other sports who participate just once a year.

From the start the event has proved popular. There were more than 500 finishers 25 years ago, and last year almost 2,000 people earned their race T-shirt.

Over the years many illustrious names have graced the Streets of Galway which boasts a prize fund of €5,000, spread across different prize categories from junior to veteran.

The men’s course record was equalled last year by Josphat Boit of Clonliffe and originally set in 1998 by Clareman Seamus Power. The women’s course record was set in 2001 by former Olympian Rosemary Ryan.

Race director Gearoid Quinn and his team of GCH volunteers are planning for similar numbers this year.

Entries are open until July 16, costing €18, although late entries, at €25, will be accepted until July 30. However numbers will be limited to 2,000 to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all.

Online entry is being used again this year along with chip timing.

It is an Athletics Ireland approved and permitted event.
