Powerboat fans to avail of park and ride service

Huge crowds are expected to descend on Galway city for the upcoming Powerboat Festival and to ease any traffic and parking issues a Park and Ride service will be in operation during the event.

Galway City Council’s Transportation Unit is once again collaborating with the Let’s Do It Galway team, Galway Racecourse, and An Garda Síochána to provide the Park and Ride service for the international water sports event which is taking place during the June bank holiday weekend.

Given the success of the Volvo Ocean Race during the same period last year, significant numbers are again expected to visit the city for the free events held throughout the festival with highlights such as Mick Flannery opening the festival on Friday June 5 and Declan O’Rourke performing on Sunday June 6.

It is also expected that people from all over the country will be present to give a great send-off to the powerboats as they embark on the first leg of their race from Galway to Killybegs on Monday June 7.

The Park and Ride service will operate on the bank holiday weekend only - Saturday June 5, Sunday June 6, and Monday June 7. The car park will be located at Galway Racecourse and buses will leave at five minute intervals throughout the day, delivering passengers right to the city centre.

The service will operate from 11.30am to 11pm on each of these days and will cost €2 per adult for the journey, which includes all day parking at Galway Racecourse and return bus travel to the city centre for the festival weekend. Children under 16 years and OAPs will be able to avail of the service free of charge.
