December start to stop Claddagh Basin sewage

By the end of this year, raw sewage should no longer be flowing into the canal and Claddagh Basin, as the Galway City Council is due to undertake works in the area in December.

Independent councillor Catherine Connolly has welcomed written confirmation from the council regarding a date for starting the works.

Cllr Connolly first raised the issue of the sewage going into the canal in June 2009 and since then “has been given various replies as to why the work was not going ahead”. This week however she received written confirmation that the required works will begin in December.

The plans for the works are on public display until Friday June 25. A formal report will then come back before the city council in July with a view to having the contractor appointed by October 31.

“I am disappointed that the commencement date is still six months away but at least a definite date has now been given,” she said. “I will be closely monitoring the progress at every step of the way.”
