Living the good life

Encouraging small scale food production is a laudable mission statement for a small organisation based in rural County Galway. Poultry keeping, fruit and vegetable growing, and even building and cooking with clay ovens are all on the Kinvara Sustainable Living menu. Anna Jeffrey Gibson and Lynn O’Keeffe-Lascar have added a new series of one day courses to their popular evening classes.

A combination of enthusiastic, knowledgeable teaching and a hearty, seasonal, home grown, home cooked lunch are a recipe for success with students who travel from all over the country to attend. Upcoming courses are beginners’ vegetable growing on Saturday April 24, build your own wood-fired clay pizza oven on Sunday April 25 (a pizza lunch will be cooked in the cob oven ), growing in poly tunnels on Saturday May 8, leisure gardening, covers, herbs, salads, plants for containers, and window boxes on May 9, spring chickens, a course on poultry keeping, on Saturday May 29, and growing and cooking with soft fruit on August 21, which will also cover jam making and preserving.

All courses run from 10.30am to 4.30pm and are in depth, with course notes supplied. Courses are run out of Doorus Orchard Community Garden, a walled garden attached to Doorus House Youth Hostel, seven kilometres from Kinvara village at the edge of the Burren. If you have a group and would like a course tailor made for your own specific needs contact Kinvara Sustainable Living to discuss it.
