Galway Taekwon-do instructor takes three gold in Germany

Local taekwon-do instructor, Shane Fitzgibbon has recently returned from a successful trip to Germany where he captained the Irish team in the German International Championships. The tournament was also attended by contestants from Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Spain. Fitzgibbon was accompanied by Listowel student (currently training in Galway ) Padraig O’ Connor.

The black belt patterns kicked off the day with Ireland getting a great start - Fitzgibbon took gold in his first division of the day. Next up was men’s team sparring. The Irish team met a spirited Dutch contingent in the final. The first few results didn’t go the Irish way, and the team found themselves needing two wins just to tie the match. O’ Connor and Fitzgibbon delivered the needed results, and O’ Connor proceeded to win the tie break bout — hence the match for Ireland. O’ Connor had to settle for bronze in the +80Kg individuals, after a close fought match against a fellow Irish teammate.

Fitzgibbon clearly dominated his German opponent in the -80kg semi-finals, but his Dutch finalist opponent proved more awkward. The Irishman’s experience ensured that he did not give anything away and he took gold, bringing his tally to three gold medals.

Fitzgibbon’s organisation, Connacht Taekwon-do Schools, runs classes in Galway city, Oranmore, Gort, Kinvara, Loughrea, and Barna. For class details contact him at 087-2070577 or visit www.connacht-taekwondo.com on the web.
