Corinthians consolidate

Corinthians are back in action with a home AIB League division two fixture against Belfast Harlequins on Saturday.

They will enter the contest with confidence, having consolidated their position in the division for next season with a 22 - 10 win against Greystones at Dr Hickey Park.

Outhalf Shane Mullaly put Corinthians on the scoreboard with an early penalty, and although the home side equalised after 20 minutes, Corinthians broke through for the first of three tries.

A solid line-out take from Pat Cunningham provided Corinthians with possession before debutant scrumhalf Hugh Griffin found Finn Gormley out wide who touched in the corner. Mullaly added the extras to put the visitors 10 - 3 ahead.

Greystones upped their game, but were unable to break down the Corinthian defence, and just before half time Griffin supplied hooker Joey Merrigan who scored under the post, with Mullaly stroking over the conversion.

Corinthians continued to pile on the pressure, but against the run of play Greystones centre Andrew Lynn gathered a loose ball to touch in the corner which Lynn converted. However the visitors maintained control and were rewarded before the final whistle when winger Darren Classeen added the third try after a great turn-over by lock Arelia Casonova.

Corinthians: D Classens, J Buckley, W Williams, F Gormally, K Russell, S Mullally, H Griffen, D Buckley, J Merrigan, J Robinson, P Cunningham (capt ), G Ward, S Geraty, A Cassanova, S Geraghty.

Monivea on top

Monivea will be treating this Easter weekend as valuable training time ahead of their next AIL round robin qualifier which takes place in Monivea against City of Derry on April 10.

Monivea have continued to fly the Connacht flag in this qualifying competition, and they are on the right track this year, having beaten Munster champions Richmond in their opening round last weekend.

It was a super win for the Monivea men who were forced to come from behind to close out the game and grab a four-try bonus point. Notable performances were produced by Rory O’Connor who scored a hat-trick of tries, added to Willie Parker’s effort.

That bonus point could prove invaluable as Monivea take on City of Derry, who lost at home to Seapoint 17 - 9, before enjoying a second home fixture against the Leinster champs.
