Galway take on the Rebels

Following their recent victory over Monaghan, Galway footballers are now away to Cork in Pairce Ui Rinn on Saturday (7.30pm ) in round three of the NFL.

Joe Kernan’s side also play Munster opposition when they face Kerry in Pearse Stadium on Sunday week, ensuring Galway’s form will be well and truly tested.

Kernan will be hopeful his side can build on the win and the confidence gained against Monaghan after recent losses to Mayo.

Cork are on the back of two wins over Monaghan in Scotstown and Kerry at home so they will be confident of having the players to give Galway plenty of trouble. They are one of the top two or three sides in the country and they will not be turned over easily at home.

Galway are not without their injury worries and Declan Meehan (hamstring ), Fiachra Breathnach (calf strain ) and Matt Clancy are all on the doubtful list.

Tuam Stars’ man Paul Doherty is out for a few weeks with an ankle strain and Tomás Fahy, who has been making a good impression in defence, turned on his ankle on Tuesday evening at training and is also expected to be absent for a few weeks.

Kernan and his management team must be impressed with the terrific effort and displays that the likes of Donal O’Neill (Cortoon Shamrocks ) and Gareth Bradshaw (Moycullen ) have been putting in recently and they will need more of those kind of displays if they are to get anything down in Cork.

They will also need the scoring power of Michael Meehan and Sean Armstrong to be working at full capacity if points are to be collected.

The team to play Cork will be announced tonight (Thursday ) and will be available on Galwaygaa.ie later this evening.
