Leisureland hall may be set for redevelopment

Leisureland has the potential to become a major and regularly used venue for concerts but it needs a dramatic revamping before this can become a reality.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil councillors and Leisureland board members councillors Michael J Crowe and Peter Keene.

Both men have welcomed the news that the Salthill venue may hire an independent consultant to draw up a report on Leisureland’s use and general operation, particularly with a view to how its main hall can be enhanced.

The company will give the a presentation next week on the terms of reference of such a report. Fianna Fáil councillors and Leisureland board members councillors Michael J Crowe and Peter Keane have this week welcomed the possibility of such a report being drawn up.

“Leisureland is owned by Galway City Council and we have also to be mindful of our public service obligation,” said Cllr Crowe, “but we need to develop the facility into more of an event centre than merely a hall.”

Cllr Keane said Salthill is suffering in these “uncertain economic times” and the “revival” of the Leisureland complex would be timely.

“The entertainment element of the Leisureland complex is totally under utilised and needs a complete revamp,” he said. “It is unacceptable that Salthill does not have a modern concert facility and that the venue has been allowed to deteriorate. We need to examine all possibilities at this stage.”
