Find out about placenames in East Galway

Placenames do not just identify a location, they say something about its geography, history, and folklore. Understanding placenames helps us to understand more about our locality.

As a result, Gaeilge Locha Riach and the Galway County Council Biodiversity Officer Elaine O’Ríordáin are inviting the general public of East Galway to attend a special presentation on placenames in the Naomh Breandán Credit Union, Loughrea, on Monday at 8pm.

Archaeologist Tamás Peterváry will give an insight into the placenames of the area with a particular emphasis on the names that are derived from nature. The main aim of this evening is to clarify an understanding of placenames and to give local people the opportunity to get to know the nature of their area better.
