Galway prepares for oldest inland waterway race

Experienced sailors will take to the Corrib next week for the Cong-Galway race, Europe’s oldest inland water race.

The race, which will take place this year on Saturday August 29, will see competitors race from Cong to the Quincentennial Bridge in Galway with the first boats departing at 9am. The boats will stop for lunch in Kilbeg before completing the journey to Galway.

Now in its 127th year, the Cong-Galway race began as a round trip from the Royal Galway Yacht Club at the Fisheries Field in Galway to Ashford Castle in Cong and back in 1882, and was a major annual event until World War I broke out in 1914. The race was revived in its present form in 1972 and has been raced annually ever since.

The race is organised by the Corrib Rowing and Yachting Club, and the club will host a barbecue and dance in the clubhouse on the evening of the event.

Further information on the event is available from the Corrib Rowing and Yachting Club, phone (091 ) 564560.
