Galway green fingers could have allotments by September

Allotments have been a feature of urban English life for decades but with the increasing sprawl of Irish cities, and gardens becoming smaller to non-existent, allotments are now becoming popular here.

Galway has experienced significant urban sprawl over the past decade and gardens have become much smaller. According to Fianna Fáil councillor Michael J Crowe, an increasing number of Galwegians have “approached me regarding the provision of allotments”.

This week Cllr Crowe confirmed that progress is being made by the Galway City Council to provide allotments around the city.

“We were never really big on allotments in Galway city and that needs to change,” said Cllr Crowe. “People want allotments and I believe we must meet this growing need.”

Cllr Crowe has held a number of meetings with the Director Of Services for the Environment and a number of potential sites have been identified.

“We now need to work through those sites, examine each one individually and finalise a number of them for allotments,” he said. “This will take a few weeks but I will continue to have regular meetings with the officials on this and try and have this sorted by September
