Public meeting to discuss the Ryan Report

Dr Peadar O’Grady, a practising child psychiatrist, will examine the Ryan Report and its recommendations in a public meeting in Galway this evening.

The Ryan Report shocked the nation with its revelations of the extent and nature of child abuse carried out by various religious orders.

Dr O’Grady will give his talk on the Ryan Report this evening at 8pm in Richardson’s, Eyre Square. The meeting is organised by the Socialist Workers Party.

Dr O’Grady will also discuss the current situation in 2009, where seven out of 10 reports of abused children in HSE areas have no allocated social worker. The National Guidelines for the Protection and Welfare of Children published in 1999 still lacks funding or a legal base.

He will also argue that justice and democracy in properly funded public services are necessary today, not closures of children’s hospital wards, cut backs in education, and underfunded social services.
