Glenmar Shellfish, a West Cork-based Lisavaird Food Group subsidiary, is delighted to announce the acquisition of Chef’s Choice Fish Company, trading as Mary’s Fish in Ballybrit, Galway.

The acquisition solidifies Glenmar Shellfish’s expansion into the West of Ireland, further strengthening its presence nationwide, which spans Dublin, Wexford, Midleton, West Cork and now Galway. Glenmar Shellfish, known for its premium seafood offerings, has been operating for 40 years and employs 48 people across its operations in Ireland, the UK and Italy. It is supplied by over 150 fishing vessels, ensuring the freshest and highest-quality seafood products.

Entering new waters

Mary’s Fish, a family-run business, established 10 years ago by Mary Kilcommins will combine with and operate under the Glenmar brand. All 15 staff members will remain employed, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity for customers and suppliers.

After a decade of 'paddling her own canoe', Mary will remain with the business managing day-to-day activity, so it is business as usual for customers of the beloved local fishmonger.

Stronger presence in the west

Juan Blanes, CEO of Glenmar Shellfish, said “We are excited to welcome the team from Mary’s Fish into the Glenmar family. This deal represents an important step in Glenmar’s growth, allowing us to build a stronger presence in the west of Ireland. Mary has built an excellent reputation for quality and we look forward to working with Mary and the team as we expand our operations.”

Lisavaird Food Group broadens its portfolio

Lisavaird Co-Op, the parent company of Lisavaird Food Group, is pleased to support this expansion as it broadens the Lisavaird Food Group’s portfolio within the Irish food industry. Lisavaird Food Group also takes pride in its membership of Bord Bia’s Origin Green. Lisavaird Co-Op established in 1925 will celebrate its centenary in 2025. Lisavaird Co-Op has been instrumental in promoting domestically sourced seafood and further reinforcing its position in the seafood sector with this acquisition.

The group recorded a turnover of €213 million in 2023, with Glenmar contributing €57 million to this figure.

Looking forward

As Mary’s Fish embarks on this new chapter, Mary remains committed to her customers and her craft.

Reflecting on her journey, she said, “It’s been a whirlwind, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Every challenge has taught me something, and every success is a testament to the hard work of our team.”

For customers, the essence of Mary’s Fish remains unchanged. The shop in Ballybrit continues to offer the same high-quality seafood that has made it a beloved local brand. “We’re still here, still serving the community,” Mary assures. With Glenmar’s resources and Mary’s expertise, the future looks bright for this Galway institution.
