What is your earliest memory?

My mother Ina driving away from our home and I thought she was gone forever. I was distraught. Turns out it was her twin sister Betty – they were identical.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A city break, a long day stretching ahead of us, maybe read a book, write a few lines.

Which talent would you most like to have and why?

I’d give it all up – the rock’n’roll lifestyle, the lot – to stand on a West End stage and blast out Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Miserables. I sing it at home all the time so I’m ready.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

When you get to 20, and you’re on holidays in Ios, Greece, and someone says “ah, those curls will grow back, don’t worry” – walk away from the beach barber.

Which person do you most admire and why?

Leo Moran of the Saw Doctors for being true to what he’s interested in.

Where and when was your most enjoyable holiday?

Krakow in Poland, circa six years ago.

What is the best thing about Mayo?

It’s got distinct regions.

What is your favourite film?

Cinema Paradiso.

What was the last book you read?

Never Better by Tommie Gorman.

What are your two favourite songs?

Shaney Boy, Kevin Johnson; Whole of the Moon, The Waterboys.

What makes you laugh?

Almost everything. In school, I was one who was always caught laughing.

What annoys you most?

People who don’t listen, who half take on board what you’ve said.

What is your worst habit?

I get distracted.

What is your most treasured possession?

My health.

How do you relax outside of work?

A walk/half-run in the woods (Ballinrobe, Cong or Moorehall ). Following Ballinrobe and Mayo footballers.

What is your favourite saying or motto?

No point owning a dog and barking yourself.

What are your greatest achievements to date?

Second Chance & Other Stories.

What is your goal in life?

Keep writing, publish some more.

Any particular project or dream you are working on right now?

A second collection of stories.
