The annual Galway Lions Club Radio Auction will take place on December 2, with some great Christmas bargains available to bid for in support of a good cause.

Galway Lions Club, which is celebrating 50 years of service in Galway this year, is seeking the support of local businesses and organisations in helping the less well off in our community, by either making a financial donation or by sponsoring an item that can be auctioned. The charity is also asking members of the public to support the auction by bidding for and purchasing the items offered for sale. Sponsors and donors can receive significant exposure through local media, including on Galway Bay FM, social media, and the Galway Advertiser during the lead up to the auction.

All proceeds from the auction will go towards supporting people in Galway who are struggling financially. The club distributes supermarket vouchers to families and individuals in need of support in the run-up to Christmas every year.

The radio auction will be held on Friday December 2 in the Galway Bay FM studios between 9am and 12 noon, and will once again be broadcast live on Galway Talks with Keith Finnegan and will be streamed live on Galway Bay FM’s Facebook page.

The Lions Club expects to have some 230 items for sale including weekends away, fuel and food vouchers, tickets to sporting events, shopping vouchers, and items of furniture. If you want a bargain, some early Christmas shopping, or simply to support a worthy cause, your support will be very welcome.

The radio auction has been running for the past 33 years, and to date has raised more than €850,000, thanks to the generous support of the business community and the people of Galway.

“Our role as Lions is to help those in need in our community in any way we can,” said Galway Lions Club president Geraldine Mannion. “We see our task as trying to give that extra little bit of help that might just make the difference and maybe help someone through a bad patch, or give them the hand they need to help them back on their feet.”

“Last Christmas, we distributed more than 600 supermarket vouchers. All of this was made possible through the generosity of the people and businesses of Galway, for which we are most grateful. We work in close co-operation with the St Vincent De Paul.”

Ms Mannion also thanked Keith Finnegan and Galway Bay FM for their support to the club over many years. “Without Keith and the Galway Bay FM team, there simply would be no auction,” she added.

All the proceeds of the auction and any donations received will go directly to helping people in the community who need extra support at Christmas time. None of the funds raised go to administrative costs as Galway Bay FM provides its services free of charge, as do all Lions Club members, and all items are donated for auction.

Bidding in the auction will open at 9am on Tuesday November 29, and you can view or bid on items on the auction website at www.galwaylionsclub.ie You can also bid by phoning 091 353250 during the Galway Talks with Keith Finnegan show on Friday December 2, and items will be sold to highest bidders throughout the show.

If you wish to donate an item for the auction, or to sponsor the annual food voucher distribution, email Galway Lions at [email protected]. You can also make a monetary donation on the Galway Lions iDonate page at www.galwaylionsclub.ie/donate

The Lions Club will also hold bucket cash collections at shopping centres around the city over the coming weeks, and a group of members and volunteers are currently undertaking a daily November sea swim to raise further funds for the club.
