Lecture on Irish popular fiction

Irish popular fiction of the mid-twentieth century is the subject of a free public lecture in the Harbour Hotel, Galway, on Monday night, October 10 at 8 pm.

The speaker is the distinguished historian, Dr Caitríona Clear of the University of Galway, and her lecture is one of series organised by the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society.

In examining popular fiction from Northern Ireland and the Republic as a source for social history, Dr Clear will consider what such fiction can tell us about everyday life during the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

And perhaps just as importantly, what it does not tell us. She will discuss whether male authors differed from female authors, and whether the works of Catholics differed from those of Protestants?

This presentation will ignite memories stimulate curiosity about writers such as Patrick Purcell, Sheila Pim, John D. Sheridan, and Patricia O’Connor, vivid and accomplished story-tellers, some of whom are remembered, and others undeservedly forgotten.
