Galway pubs and restaurants clean up in Irish Food and Bar Awards

Several Galway establishments have taken home titles in this year’s Bar of the Year Awards and The Food Awards Ireland.

Among the winners at The Food Awards Ireland are John Keogh’s Gastropub, Il Vicolo, Restaurant Gigi’s at the G Hotel, Tuco’s Taqueria and Roots Café Bar Shop on Shop Street.

Celebrating the win, Matt Hall, the owner of John Keogh’s said, “We are absolutely delighted to take home the Regional award for Best Gastropub at the Food Awards 2022 last night. It is testament to our great team who work hard everyday to ensure that we produce the best locally sourced products every night.”

“The menu offers high quality food in a relaxed setting with favourites like our six hour slow cooked lamb, homemade breads, in house made desserts and daily seafood specials all made under our multi-award winning head chef Joe Faherty,” Hall said.

Also celebrating their win at The Food Awards Ireland are head chef Dominique Majecki and his team in Restaurant Gigi’s at the G Hotel. Majecki and his team took home the Best Hotel Restaurant 2022. The French chef joined the G Hotel as head chef in March of this year coming from Glenlo Abbey where he had been executive head Chef since 2018.

Speaking on the win Majecki said, “Our prized team of chefs and staff at Restaurant gigis are passionate about showcasing local ingredients and turning them into delicious meals to suit every occasion and palate. We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and I would like to take this opportunity to extend my praise and thanks to our team at the Hotel including Food and Beverage Manager Maurice Ryan and Assistant Restaurant Manager Lukasz Matula for their continued hard work and insight.”

Similarly, Il Vicolo celebrated its win with their supporters via its Facebook page, posting that the staff were “over the moon” and that “winning the award for The Best Italian Restaurant in Ireland is a dream come true.”

Among the other winners were Tuco’s Taqueria on Abbeygate Street, which took home the award for Best Mexican Establishment and Root Café Bar Shop which won Overall Winner of Cafe/Bistro of the Year.

The Bar of the Year Awards 2022 saw wins for; An Púcán in the People’s Choice Award for Connacht/Ulster, The Front Door took home a silver trophy for Best Late Bar/Nightclub of the year, The Quays Bar and Music Hall was awarded gold Best Live Entertainment Bar, Hyde Bar Galway won Gin Bar of the Year, Tom Sheridan’s Bar and Restaurant Galway, a bronze award in the Local Bar of the Year category.

The Front Door posted about the triumph on its Facebook account saying, “We are still pinching ourselves! Delighted to have won Silver for City Bar of the Year at the Bar of the Year Awards this week!Coming second as the Best City Bar of the Year in the country is a good result for us.”
