Waking up on the couch after a long time away, being handed tea and toast by my Mam or sister.

Can’t think of any!

Which living person do you most admire?

My mother.

Which is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Occasional lack of motivation to do the smallest things, like lift a cup three feet from the table to the sink.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Books, DVDs, and cups of tea with friends.

What is your favourite journey?

The journey home.

On what occasion do you lie?

When I’m invited to things where I might end up talking to strangers and I fear I won’t have anything to say to them.

Which living person do you most despise?

Anyone associated with reality TV.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Batman. Or maybe my best friend. He also loves Batman.

When and where were you happiest?

Spending time with my best friend Bryan.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I would like to be able to fly.

What is your current state of mind?

Contented.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Getting used to working hard without giving up, and remaining passionate about my profession.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what do you think it would be?

Either a springer spaniel, or a traveller.

What is your most treasured possession?

A top that I was wearing when my father died.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Being sent to prison. I couldn’t live with the expectation of what may happen. I’d die first.

Acting. Sometimes.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Manners and dignity. Not being loutish. Getting on with it.

Logic. Emotional depth. Getting on with it.

Brett Eason Ellis, Thomas Hardy, Ernest Hemmingway, JM Synge.

Do people have mottos? I don’t.
