It has been an eventful start to the WNL campaign for Galway WFC, who chalked up a 2-0 away win over Treaty United on Saturday.

In a competitive division Alan Murphy’s Galway WFC produced a fine display to defeat Treaty United, managed by Don O’Riordan.

Murphy was satisfied with how the match unfolded. “It was good to get a performance and a win,” Murphy says.

“Again we were a little bit short of notice with the game because we didn't know whether it was on or off for a while. I thought that might have had an effect, but it didn't really.

“It probably had an effect in a good way where we were focused well. It was a good performance on the day, Treaty were well organised, as I have seen in the games so far.

“They are hard to break down, we probably should have been ahead earlier, obviously we missed a penalty and had some other chances that we could have put away. We were patient in the end, we didn't deviate from the plan that much, it was good.”

International action ensures there is no first team Galway WFC fixture scheduled until Shelbourne’s visit to Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday April 16.

“The girls need a bit of a break,” Murphy says. “Obviously they have been looking at this international window coming up, rightly so they have different plans for this weekend so we will give them a little bit of time off.

“We will be back in then next week preparing for Shelbourne which is an important game for us. It is a game at home, a game against the champions, it is a nice one for us to try to prepare for and show what we have learned in the first five games.”

Reflecting on the start of the season so far, Murphy remains optimistic. “We are learning a lot each week, we are learning a lot about ourselves, about the league, and we are developing,” he says.

“We are a new group of players and management, it takes a bit of time to gel and to get that culture going. We have changed a lot of things, we are training more, we are putting more demands on ourselves and the girls. You cannot do that overnight, it is a building process.”
