Crucial vote on ownership of Galway United

Further substantial investment could be made in there club from the Comer Brothers

A critical decision for the long term future of Galway United will be made next Wednesday when the co-op votes on an offer from The Comer Group to take an 85 per cent controlling stake.

The Galway Friends Cooperative, which has more than 100 members, will discuss the proposal which could see further substantial investment being made in the club by the Glenamaddy-native Comer Brothers.

Luke and Brian Comer have provided significant sponsorship for the Eamonn Deacy Park outfit since returning to the SSE Airtricity League in 2014.

On Monday evening, Galway United Friends Cooperative members were informed that there would be a vote on the topic on March 30.

Willing to invest

.

In 2005 property developers Luke and Brian Comer were in negotiations to take over Aston Villa in the Premier League. It is believed that the Comer brothers, from Glenamaddy, will be willing to invest in Galway United.

Four years ago, Galway United supporters voted in support of a motion to accept the offer from South Arabian businessmen to take a majority share, but that deal eventually collapsed.

In July 2019 Galway United announced that Luke and Brian Comer had made available to the club a 40-acre site in Mountain South, Athenry, for the future construction of a training facility. That is sure to be on the agenda at the upcoming meeting of the Galway United Friends Cooperative.

Galway United currently has teams operating in the national underage leagues at U14, U15, U17, and U19 level with players from the region being afforded opportunities.

Encouraging start

.

The emergence of Alex Murphy, on Republic of Ireland U19 international duty this week and attracting cross channel interest with Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City, and Glasgow Celtic monitoring his progress, highlights the value of developing local talent.

It has been an encouraging start to the first division season for John Caulfield's team on the pitch as Galway United has collected 13 points from five matches. United travel to Bishopsgate tomorrow for an important encounter against Longford Town.
