Five Galway hurling players named rising stars

Five Galway players have been named as hurling's rising stars with selection on the Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Championship Hurling Team of the year.

Galway has a strong representation on the 2022 Team of the Year with four players from NUIG and two from GMIT, while champions UL have six players on the team.

UL claimed their seventh Fitzgibbon Cup with a last gasp victory over NUIG, while MTU Kerry gained promotion from the Electric Ireland Ryan Cup after defeating Ulster University in the final.

Gearóid O’Connor – UL, Moyne/Templetuohy, Tipperary

John Fleming – NUIG, Meelick Eyrecourt, Galway

Mikey Kiely - UL, Abbeyside/Ballinacourty, Waterford

Mark Rodgers - UL, Scariff, Clare

Evan Niland - NUIG, Clarinbridge, Galway

Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said following the absence of the competition in 2021 due to Covid, the players "contributed to some fantastic moments for their third level institutions over the last few months".

The Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Rising Stars Football Team of the Year will be unveiled on Monday, with the Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Rising Star Hurling and Football Player of the Year announced on April 4.
