Salthill host Mervue in crucial league encounter

Another busy weekend beckons

FAI Junior Cup fourth round wins for Athenry, Mervue United, and Salthill Devon offered significant encouragement for Galway junior football followers at the weekend.

Athenry delivered a hugely impressive performance to defeat Ferrybank with Dan Cunningham (2 ), Adam Duffy, and Cole Connolly scoring to secure a 4-1 success.

Mervue came from behind in the capital to beat Malahide United 2-2-1 with Enda Curran and Shane Keogh scoring. Salthill Devon proved too strong for Liffey Wanderers at Drom as Victor Collins' side emerged 4-0 victors.

Tomorrow evening under the lights at Drom Salthill host Mervue in a critical league encounter. On the opening weekend of the season Salthill triumphed against Mervue at Fahy's Field so it promises to be a particularly interesting and hard fought match.

Corrib Rangers, buoyed up by a Gary Martyn inspired success over Maree-Oranmore, face the same opposition again on Saturday afternoon.

Paddy Mullins, Eoghan Roache, and Keith O'Reilly scored for St Bernard's in a fine triumph over Galway Hibernians. Next on the agenda for Bernard's is a clash with Loughrea, who were beaten by West United.

Dennis Lydon, who remains an influential figure for West, and James Ryan scored for William Grant's outfit. West are away to Colemanstown on Saturday.

Athenry's meeting with Hibs on Saturday is another attractive fixture as a highly competitive league campaign continues.
