Council collects €400,000 in fines on Corrib Great Southern Site

Agreement struck this week between City Hall and site owners over collection of penalties

Galway City Council have received an estimated €400,000 in fines imposed under the Derelict Sites Legislation in discharge of amounts due for 2020 and 2021.

The fines were collected from the owners of the Corrib Great Southern site, and it is understood that management within City Hall had been in negotiations with the site owners, The Comer Group, relating to the collection of the fines due which culminated in an agreement being reached earlier this week.

.

The collection of the fines has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor Alan Cheevers. “This property has been a serious eyesore for many years now. It has been a constant source and location for serious anti-social behavior,” he said. “It has been the bane of the lives of local residents for far too long.”

Cllr Cheevers has also welcomed the continuing demolition works being undertaken at the site. When asked about how the fines should be spent, he said they should be “ring-fenced for worthy projects on the east side of the city”. He has forwarded a motion to Galway City Council for support on this.
