Access for All and Flirt FM to highlight reality of living with disability in Galway

Two programmes on Flirt to explore life from the point of view of people with disabilities

Galway Access for All, with the help of Flirt FM 101.3, will be taking over the radio airwaves today and tomorrow to mark International Day for People with Disabilities.

International Day for People with Disabilities falls on December 3 each year, and in advance of that, three actors from Blue Teapot, the award-winning Galway theatre company - whose members are adults with intellectual disabilities - will be interviewed on Flirt FM, this evening, Thursday December 2, from 6pm to 8pm.

Charlene, Jennifer and Kieran will talk about how they came to join the company; their achievements, including playwriting and performing Shakespeare; their experience of the lockdowns; and which superhero they would like to be.

.

The second programme takes place tomorrow, also from 6pm to 8pm, on Flirt FM. It will begin with an address to people with disabilities, from the Mayor, Cllr Colette Connolly [pictured above], on actions that are being taken in the city to make it more accessible for disabled people.

The show will also feature a series of sensitive audio recordings made by people with disabilities at problem areas around the city, revealing what it is like to live with a physical and/or intellectual disability.

There will be contributions from Fiona Woods, an artist who worked with AFA to facilitate the project, and AFA’s Eamon Mac Giobuin, who will talk about a pamphlet that was produced alongside the audio work.

.

Both radio shows are part of Flirt FM's Community Group Takeover programme. Flirt is Galway's alternative, student, and community station, based in NUI Galway. The programmes can be listened to here.

Galway Access for All is a network of individuals who have lived experiences of disabilities, along with local disability organisations, and community stakeholders, whose goal is to improve universal access in and around the city.
