Continued rise in Galway rents ‘outrageous’, says Farrell

Latest Daft.ie report shows rents in Galway city up 8.3% and 18.8% in the county

Rents in Galway city have risen by 8.3 per cent, while rents in the county are up by 18.8 per cent, according to the latest rental report from Daft.ie

Sinn Féin Galway West TD, Mairéad Farrell said the report is “clear evidence that Government housing policy is failing”.

Dep Farrell [pictured below] noted that rents are up in every county across the State, but the “most dramatic” rise is in the west.

“This is outrageous, especially when you take into account the fact that in Rent Pressure Zones, rents are meant to be capped. Every area outside of Dublin is well over this cap. Clearly this policy is failing to keep rents in check.”

.

She said it was “even more outrageous” was the report’s finding that this current quarter has the lowest rental stock since 2006, with only 57 properties listed on Daft for rent in Galway. By contrast there are “hundreds of properties” available on AirBnB for short term and holiday lets.

Dep Farrell called for a rental freeze, and then measures to be brought in to lower rents. “The housing crisis will only get worse,” she said, “without swift and effective action from the Government.”
