Vital weekend beckons in local premier division

An exciting season continues to unfold

With four teams to be relegated and a string of clubs involved in the title race this is turning into a particularly exciting Galway FA premier division season.

Following a disappointing midweek loss to Salthill Devon, West United brought trademark passion to O'Connor Park on Sunday when defeating Corrib Celtic 3-1.

The Annaghdown based outfit have been gritty throughout the opening weeks of the campaign, hitting the front in the Swamp courtesy of Shane Concannon.

West, though, responded as the pacy Matthew Barrett struck twice, while Pierre Garaix also contributed a goal.

Ultimately it means West's trip to Athenry on Saturday afternoon will be worth monitoring considering Seamie Crowe's side will be protecting a proud 100 per cent record.

Colemanstown, despite a first half Tomas Carr goal, were beaten 3-1 by St Bernard's. Colin Treacy, Glen Kelly, and Paddy Mullins scored for Bernard's with Darrel Finn and Matt Cosgrove making a significant impact in the second period.

Now Colemanstown host Victor Collins' Salthill, who are motoring smoothly, after an FAI Junior Cup triumph over Corrib Rangers.

Maree-Oranmore, boosted by the signing of Andrew Connolly, are beginning to make progress so the upcoming fixture against Loughrea will be crucial.

With five victories from six matches, Noel McDonnell's Mervue United host Stephen Walsh's Hibernians on Saturday.

Other revealing fixtures are on the agenda on Sunday with Corrib Celtic and Tuam Celtic eager to claim the spoils.

Bernard's, boosted by last weekend's triumph, know that Corrib Rangers will pose stern questions at the Westside.
