New orienteering facility to open in Merlin Woods

Galway city families are set to benefit from a new orienteering facility in Merlin Woods, Merlin Park, and which will be open to the public towards the end of the summer.

Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Leahy, a member of the Galway Health Cities Project, worked with members of the local community to bring this facility to Galway.

“This facility will a very valuable educational and health focused facility for families, schools and local businesses within our city,” she said. “It is a prime example of how we can deliver exceptional facilities for our city on a low cost basis when we combine our energy and determination.”

An open day for the community will be held next September. Ecologist Dr Amanda Brown is currently identifying the indigenous fauna and flora within the woods and this information will be available on various educational signage at the start of the orienteering trail.

“National schools and families can now look forward to a healthy fun day out,” said Cllr Leahy, “while local businesses who wish to avail of team building initiatives will also be able to use this facility.”
