Cregmore Bridge is a danger to pedestrians and motorists, especially as it is near a school and often used by trucks, and the Galway County Council needs to take action now.
This is the view of Independent Athenry-Oranmore Municipal Area District councillor, Jim Cuddy, who is calling on the council to contact the Road Safety Authority to discuss what safety measures can be put in place.
“The bridge is a narrow humpback bridge with very poor visibility for pedestrians and vehicles going in both directions,” said Cllr Cuddy. “The bridge is too narrow for two cars to meet safely and in the case of heavy vehicles, only one can cross the bridge at a time.”
He said vehicles “regularly have to reverse back”, in order to let others pass, and that this makes the bridge “even more dangerous”. He also pointed out that there is a national school nearby, but “walking or cycling to school is out of the question for pupils, as the bridge is far too dangerous”.
