THE YOUNG musicians of Athenry Music School Sinfonietta will give their debut performance of ‘A Baroque Session (with Carolan & Friends )’ by Raymond Deane online at 7pm on Culture Night, Friday, September 17.

The performance will be conducted by Galway musician Sinead Hayes, who has led weekly Zoom rehearsals with the Athenry musicians. They young musicians will also be joined by The West Ocean String Quartet’s Séamus McGuire and Niamh Crowley (violins ) and Kenneth Rice (viola ), and cellist Adrian Mantu from the ConTempo String Quartet.

‘A Baroque Session (with Carolan & Friends )’ fuses Irish traditional and European classical music, and was composed by Raymond Deane, following a commission in 2009 by the Young European Strings, Dublin.

“This performance is a testament to the amazing resilience and talent of these young musicians,' says Sinead. “'Like all of us, they have been working individually online, just waiting for a chance to play music together again!”

.

This performance is funded by a Music Project Award from the Arts Council of Ireland, and was filmed by Heavy Man Films in the Irish Chamber Orchestra Studios in the University of Limerick. Socially distant rehearsals took place in the Mercy Convent, Tuam.

Access to the performance is via a free ticket. Tickets are available from www.baroquesession.com

As part of the project, musicians of all ages and levels can create their own Baroque Session using a free E-book on www.baroquesession.com, where they can discover and play the tunes that inspired the piece, then fracture and fuse them together to create something new.
