Spiddal Sewerage Scheme expected to stop raw sewage being discharged into Galway Bay

€4 million water infrastructure upgrade expected to be completed by 2024

Work is set to begin on the Spiddal Sewerage Scheme, a €4 million water infrastructure upgrade to stop raw sewage from being discharged into Galway Bay.

The project will include a new wastewater treatment plant, new sewer pipelines, rising mains, and an underground pumping station. The works will be carried out by Coffey Water Limited and will be delivered in line with Covid-19 regulations. Work will commence in the coming weeks and will be completed by early 2024.

The scheme will upgrade and future-proof the water infrastructure in An Spidéal, ensuring it is capable of serving a population of 1,000 people; eliminate the discharge of untreated wastewater into Galway Bay in compliance with EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and Environmental Protection Agency wastewater discharge licensing; enhance water quality in Galway Bay; and protect the local marine environment.

The scheme has been welcomed by the Minister of State, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured above].

“Galway’s maritime location is an integral part of its identity and attractiveness, and it’s crucial that we do everything we can to protect and enhance it,” she said. “This scheme will do that and enhance the beauty, amenity and functionality of our environment.”
