Opel to go fully electric by 2028

Opel says it will only offer battery electric vehicles in Europe as of 2028.

The German brand will have nine electrified models on offer by the end of this year, and all models will also be available in electrified versions by 2024.

“As of 2028, Opel will only offer electric cars in our core market Europe,” said CEO Michael Lohscheller.

“This clearly shows the commitment of the Opel brand to electric mobility. The future of the automotive industry is electric and Opel is part of that.

“We are on a journey to reinventing Opel and transforming ourselves into a young, green and global brand.

“Opel is moving from cold to cool. We are heading towards a net zero CO2 future as CO2 is the new currency in our industry.”

The brand will also enter the world’s largest automobile market, China, as a purely electric brand. Furthermore, the Opel Manta will celebrate its comeback as a purely electric car.

Lohscheller added: “We promised that Opel will go global and we will deliver. China is the largest automotive market in the world and we are sure that we will grow profitably there.

“The Manta is a real icon in our brand’s history and an inspiration for its future. We will bring a new Manta into serial production by mid-decade. Purely electric, of course.”
