GRETB training centre to take part pilot Covid-19 antigen testing scheme

Pilot process to help evaluate use of rapid antigen diagnostic tests in identifying the virus

The Galway Roscommon ETB Training Centre Galway in Mervue Business Park, has been chosen as part of a State-wide pilot antigen testing scheme.

The centre, along with training centres Ballina, Cavan, and Finglas, and Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design, and Technology, will take part in a new pilot process to help evaluate the use of rapid antigen diagnostic tests in identifying Covid-19.

The HSE, with the Department of Further and Higher Education, and the Department of Children and Youth, is undertaking this process to learn more about how the tests might be used more widely in third-level settings.

The news has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD, and Minister for State at the Departments of Justice and Transport, Hildegarde Naughton.

“I am happy to see the GRETB training centre as part of the HSE pilot on rapid testing,” she said. “We still have a lot to learn about antigen testing and particularly their suitability for large scale use in a congregated setting, such as in education.”

She added that the possible introduction of antigen testing in various settings “should in no way take away from the necessity to follow public health guidelines”.
