Flood relief scheme could take seven years to complete

Galway City Council chief executive Brendan McGrath says the timelines are "realistic"

Galway city councillors have expressed concern that the Coirib go Cósta flood relief scheme might not be ready until 2028.

Councillors were told that extensive survey work has to be carried out with construction expected to commence in 2025 on the project. Estimated costs are €9.5 million, but Galway City Council chief executive Brendan McGrath said that the budget will be determined on the scheme design.

'Realistic'

"This is a priority project for the OPW and the Galway City Council," Mr McGrath said. "The city council with the consent of the OPW has appointed Arup to work on our behalf. We have collectively agreed the importance to Galway city warrants we approach with haste."

Highlighting the expected delays with planning issues Mr McGrath added that the "timelines are realistic". The first phase of the project requires a full review and analysis of existing data and the collection of further information.

A scheme specific website www.coiribgocosta.ie has been launched, with Arup's Emer Kennedy adding 'this is an ambitious project and everybody on the steering committee realises how impactful it will be'.
