Bins for pizza boxes to be trialled across the city

Outdoor dining has resulted in an increase in bins becoming “clogged up” with pizza boxes

Bins specifically designed to take pizza boxes will be installed and trialled at various locations throughout the city, including Salthill and the Spanish Arch.

The pilot scheme follows a request from Fine Gael Galway City West councillor, Clodagh Higgins, to the Galway City Council environment section to invest in these bins. “With more and more eating outdoors, bins were becoming clogged up with bulky packaging of pizza boxes,” she said.

The council’s litter management unit is currently in the process of procuring bins with larger openings for specific items such as pizza boxes.

“With outdoor dining, it is important every effort is taken to ensure we have bins fit for purpose,” she said. “It is also important for people to take personal responsibility to discard their litter. The simple message is, help keep our city litter free and take all your rubbish home with you if bins are full.”
